Interim Asante Kotoko head coach Prince Yaw Owusu has attributed his side’s 1-0 defeat to Hearts of Oak to a costly goalkeeping error in Sunday’s Ghana Premier League Super Clash.
Owusu, who stepped into the role just a week after the club parted ways with former head coach Abdul Karim Zito, oversaw the high-profile encounter at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium
Kotoko matched their rivals for large spells of the contest but were undone in the 15th minute when Baba Adamu headed home. Goalkeeper Mohammed Camara was caught off his line, allowing the looping effort to sail past him—an error Owusu believes ultimately decided the outcome.
Despite the result, the interim coach praised his players for their determination and effort.
“I think the boys did their best. They kept fighting until the end. It’s just the mistake from the goalkeeper that cost us,” Owusu said in his post-match remarks.
He acknowledged that the defeat significantly dents Kotoko’s title hopes.
“This loss makes our title ambition very difficult. Now we need to fight very hard before we can get the title.”
The setback leaves Kotoko fifth on the Ghana Premier League table with 35 points, now trailing leaders Medeama SC by nine points as the title race intensifies.
