The government has confirmed that it is providing financial support for the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League as part of efforts to strengthen domestic football.
Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Iddie Adams said the government’s support is aimed at helping Premier League clubs become financially stable and eventually operate without depending heavily on state funding.
The announcement comes at a time when the Ghana Premier League continues to operate without a major commercial title sponsor, leaving clubs facing significant financial challenges.
According to Adams, the government intends to continue supporting the league until the clubs are strong enough to finance their operations independently.
He explained that the government’s plan is not limited to providing money to the clubs but also includes developing domestic football and building stronger football structures.
Ahead of the start of the 2026/27 season, each of the 18 Premier League clubs received GH¢1 million in government support.
The money is expected to help clubs meet their operational expenses and manage the financial demands of competing throughout the season.
The government’s intervention follows its earlier support for the 2025/26 Premier League season, when state funding was announced as part of efforts to provide financial assistance to domestic clubs.
Adams said the government could eventually channel its resources into other areas of football development once Premier League clubs become financially independent.
The 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season began in September, with 18 clubs competing for the league title and places in continental competitions.
