Former Hearts of Oak striker, Kofi Kordzi, has expressed concern over the financial struggles faced by Ghana Premier League players, citing low salaries as the primary reason for the exodus of players to other leagues.
Kordzi believes that players are willing to transfer to the most remote leagues for better salaries because the salaries in the local league are very low. According to reports, some players in the GPL earn as little as GH₵300 per month, a figure that highlights the financial challenges faced by many athletes in the league.
This is particularly concerning given that these players are considered professionals in their field. Kordzi’s comments echo the sentiments of many players who have spoken out about their financial struggles, with some opting to leave Ghana for better-paying opportunities abroad.
In an interview aired on Asempa FM, Kordzi said, “The Ghana Premier League players as a whole are suffering. All of it is about the low wages. That’s why when some players play in the league small they prefer to go to Togo for better wages to cater for their families.”
Kordzi also emphasized that some teams do not pay their players regularly, which adds to the financial struggles faced by players.
He urged measures to be put in place to ensure that the government helps alleviate the financial burden on players.
“The salary comes but some teams too it doesn’t come. Some measures should be put in place so the government can help.”
