The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has announced that the government will no longer finance the travel of supporters to major international tournaments to cheer on the Black Stars.

For many years, the state has invested heavily in airlifting fans to back Ghana’s senior national team at events such as the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and the FIFA World Cup. However, Adams says that practice is coming to an end.

“I don’t think that government must spend money to fly fans to tournaments,” Adams stated during an interview with Starr FM.

He further explained, “We can bring corporate bodies to send supporters, but not government money,” emphasizing the need for private sector involvement in supporting fans’ participation at such events.

Traditionally, the government covered the transportation and accommodation expenses for large contingents of fans during international competitions. The new policy signals a significant shift in approach and could change how Ghanaian supporters are organized for future tournaments.
