Government to nominate three members to committee selecting next Black Stars coach

The government is expected to have three representatives on the committee responsible for identifying and recommending a new head coach for the Black Stars, following discussions between the Ministry of Sports and Recreation and the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

The arrangement emerged from a meeting held on Friday, October 2, 2026, between Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams, GFA President Kurt Okraku and members of the association’s Executive Committee at the Ministry in Accra.

The meeting, which lasted more than two hours, focused on the future direction of Ghana’s senior national team and the process of finding a replacement for Carlos Queiroz.

A key outcome was the decision to establish a technical search committee to assess potential candidates and recommend a suitable coach for the Black Stars.

The expected participation of three government representatives would give the Ministry a direct role in the selection process, although the GFA will remain responsible for the formal administration of Ghanaian football.

The development follows the mutual termination of Queiroz’s working relationship with the GFA after Ghana endured a disappointing start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

The Black Stars opened their Group C campaign with a 2-0 defeat to Côte d’Ivoire in Bouaké before suffering a 4-2 loss to The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium, despite taking a two-goal lead in the first half.

The consecutive defeats have left Ghana without a point from its opening two matches, increasing the urgency for a new technical direction as the team seeks to revive its qualifying campaign.

Government participation in the coaching search is not entirely new. In 2024, the GFA established a five-member committee to assess candidates for the Black Stars coaching position and submit recommendations to the Executive Council, which retained the final authority over the appointment. A representative of the then Ministry of Youth and Sports was also part of that committee.

The latest arrangement signals a renewed effort to involve the government more directly in decisions concerning the national team, particularly as public attention focuses on the team’s performances and the management of football resources.

The government has previously linked its involvement in national-team matters to its financial support for the teams, while the GFA has maintained responsibility for football administration and technical decisions.

The incoming committee will therefore face the task of identifying a coach whose experience, tactical approach and understanding of the demands of international football match Ghana’s immediate needs.

Beyond selecting a replacement for Queiroz, the next appointment will come with considerable pressure to improve performances, restore confidence among supporters and guide the team through the remaining AFCON qualifying fixtures.

The process is expected to attract significant public attention as the Ministry and the GFA work towards identifying a candidate capable of providing stability and a clear technical direction for the Black Stars.
