Chris Hughton, the coach of the Black Stars, has reaffirmed his decision to include Jonathan Sowah, a forward from the domestic league, in the squad for the AFCON qualifier against the Central African Republic.
Jonathan Sowah, who currently plays for Medeama, secured his place in the squad due to his exceptional performances in both the Ghana Premier League and the CAF Champions League. His recent standout performance, which included scoring two goals in the Super Cup match against Dreams FC, left a strong impression on Hughton, leading to his inclusion in the squad for the upcoming Thursday game.
Speaking at a pre-match press conference, Hughton expressed his confidence in Sowah’s selection, stating, “I think it’s good to see him in the squad and I think he deserves it. I was fortunate enough to see him in another game on Sunday; he scored two goals and potentially could have scored another two. It has been my responsibility to watch as many games as I can,” said Hughton at the pre-match presser.
Hughton went on to emphasize the importance of closely monitoring the local league and its players, considering the wealth of talent available. He revealed that Jonathan Sowah had been recommended to him even before he had the chance to witness his skills firsthand. Consequently, Sowah’s inclusion in the squad is well-deserved.
“I can only watch so many because although this our local League, we also have a huge amount of players playing in so I watch as many games as I can which helps me to get an understanding of the levels of the teams and the Leagues and more so about the individuals. Jonathan was one I have to say was brought to my attention first before I had the opportunity to see him so yes he will be in the squad and is very much deservedly so.”
Jonathan Sowah may make his debut for the national team in the match against the Central African Republic in Kumasi on Thursday. Additionally, he is part of the squad for an upcoming international friendly against Liberia scheduled for next Tuesday.
