Black Stars head coach, Otto Addo, has explained his decision to omit veteran forward Andre Ayew from his squad for the June international break, saying it was in the best interest of the national team.
In an interview with 3Sports, Addo praised Ayew as a “living legend” who has given so much to Ghana, but emphasized that he had to make tough decisions to ensure the team’s success.
Addo said that he has no doubt about Ayew’s sacrifices and dedication to the country, but as a coach, he has to think about what’s best for the team.
“As a coach, I have to think about what’s best for the Ghana national team. I mean, he represents Ghana these days like no one has,” he said.
Despite missing the games against Mali and the Central African Republic, Ayew still has a chance of returning to the Black Stars, according to Addo.
“I think it’s a normal question. He’s a player. I said it before; he’s a legend, a living legend.
“He has done so much for the nation. He sacrificed so much for the nation. He’s a good guy, with good character. I mean, he represents Ghana these days like no one has,” Coach Otto Addo said.
The coach’s comments have sparked mixed reactions from fans and pundits, with some calling for Ayew’s inclusion in the team and others supporting Addo’s decision.
