Joseph Paintsil has earned high praise from Greg Vanney, who believes the Ghana international’s pace and versatility make him a crucial weapon for LA Galaxy.
Paintsil, who joined the MLS side in 2024 and played a key role in their title-winning campaign, has continued to be influential despite a brief spell on the sidelines due to injury this season. The 28-year-old has already found the net twice in his last three league appearances, underlining his return to form.
He was particularly decisive in Galaxy’s recent draw against Vancouver, where he helped secure a valuable point, further strengthening his reputation within the squad.
Speaking after the match, Vanney highlighted what makes the Ghanaian attacker so dangerous.
“What he gives us is he’s fast as hell, and he can run behind anybody from anywhere at any moment,” Vanney said. “It gives the opposition something they have to respect at all times.”
The Galaxy coach also noted Paintsil’s ability to influence games in different roles across the pitch, particularly when deployed centrally.
“When he’s in the middle, I feel like he’s more involved in the game. With his pace and direct running, he creates chances nobody else can,” he explained.
Vanney added that Paintsil’s presence forces defenders into uncomfortable situations, especially against quicker, more agile forwards.
“For centre-backs, when they have a small, quick guy who is as shifty and fast as he is, it’s a nightmare,” he said.
The coach concluded that Paintsil’s ability to stretch defences remains one of LA Galaxy’s most important attacking tools, whether in transition or structured build-up play.
