Ghanaian winger Marcel Opoku has reflected on his football journey, revealing that the creativity and flair that define his game were forged on the streets of Ghana before being refined through spells in England and Spain.
The 24-year-old recently joined Swedish Division One side Assyriska FF on a one-year deal with an option to extend after leaving Spanish fourth-tier club RCD Ricla.
Speaking after completing the move, Opoku explained how playing in three different football cultures has helped shape his style.
“It became a combination of street football instinct, English tactical sharpness and Spanish technical finesse that shaped me into the player I am today,” he said.
The Ghanaian believes his technical quality, football intelligence and unpredictability make him a constant threat in the final third.
“Opponents know that I can create something out of nothing if I’m given time and space out on the wing, while my teammates know they can trust me to create chances and break down defensive lines under pressure,” Opoku said.
Comfortable with both feet and capable of striking from long range, the winger is eager to showcase his qualities in Sweden.
Opoku also explained why Assyriska FF was the ideal destination for the next phase of his career.
“The unique history, the deeply passionate community behind the club, and what Assyriska means to its supporters around the world made the choice easy for me,” he said.
“The fact that the club also has a demanding, competitive environment where high standards are expected every day was also a plus.”
The Ghanaian is now determined to earn regular playing time and make a positive impact at his new club.
“I’m prepared to work relentlessly in training and stay in good shape, and in that way hope to earn my chances for playing time,” he added.
