Josh Acheampong, English-born defender of Ghanaian descent has expressed his excitement after signing a new five-year contract at Chelsea, keeping him at the London-based club until the summer of 2029.

The highly-rated 18-year-old was initially on the brink of leaving Stamford Bridge after negotiations between the club and his representatives stalled. However, his impressive performances across youth and senior levels convinced the club to secure his services long-term.

“I’m so pleased to announce that I have signed a new contract with my boyhood club,” Acheampong shared. “Excited for this new chapter. It means so much, and I can’t wait to continue this journey.”

Acheampong, who started his career in Chelsea’s developmental setup, has risen through the ranks, featuring for the U18 and U21 teams before making the leap to the senior squad.

The young defender made his first-team debut against Tottenham and has since been a consistent presence under head coach Enzo Maresca. Acheampong recently delivered a standout performance in Chelsea’s Europa Conference League victory over Astana, helping the Blues progress to the knockout stages.

At the international level, Acheampong has represented England’s youth teams, including a notable role in the 2022 U17 World Cup in Indonesia. Despite his commitments to England, he remains eligible to play for Ghana’s Black Stars, sparking hopes of a potential switch in allegiance.

However, he made his mark on the international stage, featuring for England at the Under-17 European Championships in the summer of 2023 and the Under-17 World Cup the following November.
