FC Augsburg defender Patric Pfeiffer has announced his readiness to represent Ghana’s national football team, the Black Stars, following his application for a Ghanaian passport.

Pfeiffer, 24, is a towering 1.96m tall centre-back born in Hamburg, Germany. His football journey began in the youth ranks of Hamburger SV and took a significant leap when he broke through at Darmstadt 98 in Bundesliga 2 in December 2019.

After helping Darmstadt secure promotion to the Bundesliga in the 2023/24 season, Pfeiffer joined Augsburg on a free transfer and made 11 appearances last season.

Though he represented Germany at the U18 and U19 levels, Pfeiffer’s development has attracted the interest of the Black Stars, and he is now eager to wear the Ghanaian jersey. During Augsburg’s pre-season camp in Mpumalanga, he revealed his recent visit to Ghana and the acquisition of his Ghanaian passport.

“A few weeks ago I was in Ghana and now I get my passport,” Pfeiffer shared with journalists. “I hope in September I can get a call-up. I know the coach, Otto Addo, because he was the coach of Hamburg’s youth team where I played. I have good contacts with him. I wanted to join the Black Stars before but didn’t have my passport, but now it’s done and I’m ready.”

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) confirmed Pfeiffer’s interest in switching nationality in July 2022. Although he has yet to make his debut for the Black Stars, Pfeiffer is enthusiastic about representing the country he loves.

“Yes of course, because this is my motherland, I love Ghana, I love the people, I love the vibe, I love the food,” he added. “Yes, I was born and raised in Germany but I love Ghana [as well].”

The Black Stars will kick off their campaign to qualify for the 2025 CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco in September, with a match against Angola in Kumasi.

Ghana is in Group F, alongside Angola, Sudan, and Niger. The AFCON tournament is scheduled to run from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026.

The Black Stars will face Angola and Niger between September 2 and September 10 during the first international break of the 2024-2025 season.
