South Africa’s head coach Hugo Broos has released his 22-man squad for the upcoming International Friendly games in March against Algeria and Andorra.
Speaking after the announcement of the squad, Hugo Broos disclosed to the press that he never thought of leaving South Africa.
“There were lots of rumours after AFCON [in Ivory Coast], there were a lot of countries who were interested and are maybe still interested.
Many countries including Cameroon, Algeria, and Tunisia were all interested in Hugo Broos’ signature but the 71-year-old Belgian tactician decided to stay with Bafana Bafana.
“But again I told the president [Dr Danny Jordan] that I’ll stay in South Africa. I don’t see myself changing again, or building again. I have something here, I know what I have here. I love the life here,” said Hugo Broos.
The Bafana Bafana head coach talked about his love for South Africa. He disclosed his willingness to finish the project he is doing for South Africa.
Al Ahly’s forward Percy Tau was not included in the 22-man squad to face Algeria and Andorra. The head coach said that he personally decided to drop Tau and ensured South Africans that he would be in the squad shortly.
“I said ‘no’ to Percy [Tau] stay [in Egypt]. If he comes for the friendlies, he should play and it [the noise from the fans about his performance] starts again. He will be there [in the Bafana Bafana squad in the future]” added Hugo Broos.
South Africa finished third at the just-ended 2023 AFCON and will start preparations ahead of the 2025 AFCON qualifiers and the continuity of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers the friendly games against Andorra and Algeria.
