Black Stars Technical Advisor Winfried Schaefer has urged home-based players to step up their game if they hope to earn a place in the national team, reaffirming the importance of the Ghana Premier League as the foundation of the country’s footballing talent.
Speaking to Medeama FM, the experienced German tactician revealed that he has been closely monitoring domestic football, visiting league venues, speaking with coaches, and assessing players in preparation for upcoming competitions.
“Over the past two months, I have been visiting league venues and speaking with coaches and players. The best player I have seen is Benjamin Asare, and he is the Black Stars’ first choice goalkeeper,” Schaefer said, praising the Ghana Premier League standout.
The former national team coach stressed that while European-based players often attract attention, the heart of Ghanaian football lies in the local league, where emerging talent can make a significant impact.
“The heart of football in Ghana is in the local league, not only with players in Europe,” he added.
Schaefer also challenged domestic players to raise their performance levels and fully exploit the opportunities available at home if they aspire to don the Black Stars jersey.
“I urge all players to work hard if they want to earn a call-up into the Black Stars,” he said.
