‘I won’t say no if Nigeria hands me a call-up’ – Lawrence Agyekum

West African Football Academy (WAFA) graduate, Lawrence Agyekum, has revealed he is eligible to represent both Ghana and Nigeria at the international level, and he is open to honoring a call-up from either nation.

Born in Ghana to a Nigerian mother, Agyekum qualifies to play for the Super Eagles, a possibility he did not rule out in a recent interview. The 20-year-old midfielder began his career at WAFA, where his impressive performances earned him a first-team spot in 2020. His talent soon attracted the attention of European scouts, leading to his transfer to Austrian giants Red Bull Salzburg in 2022.

Currently, Agyekum is on a season-long loan at Belgian Pro League side Cercle Brugge, where he has already made nine appearances in the ongoing season, aiming for more regular playing time.

In a recent interview with OwnGoalNigeria.com, Agyekum discussed his international prospects, explaining his dual eligibility and expressing his openness to representing Nigeria despite being born in Ghana.

“My father is from Ghana, but my mother is Nigerian. I can play for both nations. That’s something people don’t know about me, and if the chance to play for the Super Eagles comes, I won’t say no,” Agyekum shared.

He also spoke about his support for both nations’ footballing ambitions. “I have love for both countries and want to see them do well. Ghana hasn’t had the best results in AFCON qualifiers, but they’re doing well in the World Cup qualifiers. For Nigeria, it’s the reverse. I follow both closely.”

As the season progresses, Agyekum will be hoping to feature in Cercle Brugge’s upcoming fixture against Union Saint-Gilloise this weekend.
