France-born defender Marvin Senaya has received his first call-up to the Black Stars, as Ghana looks to finally solve its long-standing issues at right-back ahead of upcoming friendlies against Germany and Austria.
Since the retirement of John Paintsil and Samuel Inkoom, the national team has struggled to find a consistent option in that role. While Alidu Seidu has shown promise, he is naturally a right centre-back at club level, making his deployment as a full-back less effective.
Injuries to Tariq Lamptey have further exposed the lack of depth, creating an urgent need for a reliable solution—one Senaya could provide.
Senaya Brings Modern Full-Back Qualities
Currently playing for AJ Auxerre, Senaya is known for his energy, pace, and defensive discipline. He combines strong tackling and interceptions with an attacking edge, frequently making overlapping runs and contributing in the final third.
His style fits the profile of a modern full-back, with strengths in dribbling, crossing, and defensive awareness, making him an exciting addition to Otto Addo’s squad.
Ghana and Togo Battle for Senaya’s International Future
Senaya’s call-up has generated excitement among fans, but his international future remains undecided. The defender is also eligible to represent Togo through his father, former international Yao Mawuko Senaya.
Interestingly, Togo had already included him in their squad for upcoming friendlies against Guinea and Niger, setting up a tug-of-war between the two nations.
A Crucial Decision Ahead of the World Cup
With the FIFA World Cup approaching and Ghana in need of stability in defence, Senaya’s decision could prove pivotal.
His potential commitment would not only strengthen the Black Stars but also finally provide a long-term solution to one of the team’s most problematic positions in recent years.
