Is Carlos Baleba the missing piece Manchester United have been searching for?

Manchester United have officially completed the signing of Cameroon international Carlos Baleba, and with the midfielder arriving at Old Trafford from Brighton & Hove Albion, one major question will dominate discussions around the club — could Baleba be the missing piece in United’s midfield?

The 22-year-old has joined Manchester United on a four-year contract that will keep him at Old Trafford until 2031, with the club holding an option to extend the agreement by another year.

Although United have not officially disclosed the transfer fee, reports in England indicate that the club has invested around £65 million to secure one of the Premier League’s most highly-rated young midfielders.

That price tag comes with expectations.

Baleba arrives at United after developing into an important player at Brighton, where his combination of physical strength, ball-carrying ability, defensive awareness and energy made him one of the standout young midfielders in the league.

And those qualities could be exactly what Manchester United have been missing.

For several seasons, United have struggled to find the right balance in midfield — a player capable of winning possession, protecting the defence, carrying the ball through pressure and giving the team the physical presence required to compete against the Premier League’s strongest sides.

Baleba possesses many of those characteristics.

The left-footed midfielder is not simply a player who sits in front of the defence and breaks up attacks. He is also comfortable driving forward with the ball and helping his team progress from deep areas.

That ability could prove particularly valuable for United.

At Brighton, Baleba gradually established himself as a midfielder capable of handling the physical and tactical demands of Premier League football. He made 92 league appearances, scoring three goals and providing one assist during his time with the Seagulls.

His statistics may not immediately jump off the page, but Baleba’s influence goes beyond goals and assists.

His biggest strengths are found in the areas that can sometimes be difficult to measure — winning duels, recovering possession, carrying the ball, covering ground and providing protection for the defenders behind him.

Those are qualities Manchester United will be hoping he brings to Old Trafford.

The Cameroon international also arrives with international experience, having become an important member of the Indomitable Lions.

He featured prominently during Cameroon’s run to the Round of 16 at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, where the West African side eventually suffered a 2-0 defeat to Nigeria.

That experience has given Baleba an opportunity to perform under pressure on the international stage, something that should help him as he takes on the enormous expectations associated with playing for Manchester United.

A Different Kind Of Midfielder

One of the biggest attractions of Baleba is his versatility.

He can operate as a defensive midfielder, but he is also capable of contributing further forward when the situation demands it.

His physicality allows him to compete in midfield battles, while his ability to carry the ball can help United escape pressure and transition quickly from defence into attack.

For a Manchester United side looking to become more competitive and consistent, that combination could be crucial.

The club has often been criticised for allowing opponents too much space through the middle of the pitch and for struggling to control games when under pressure.

Baleba could provide an additional layer of security.

His presence could allow United’s more creative players greater freedom to operate higher up the pitch, knowing that there is a physically imposing midfielder capable of covering ground behind them.

But there is also another side to the signing.

At just 22, Baleba remains a developing player.

He is not arriving at Old Trafford as the finished product, and the £65 million reported fee will inevitably increase the pressure on him.

Manchester United supporters will expect immediate results, while the Premier League offers very little time for young players to adjust.

Baleba will therefore have to adapt quickly to the demands of playing for one of the world’s biggest clubs.

Is He The Missing Piece?

That is the question Manchester United fans will ultimately want answered.

Baleba certainly appears to possess several of the characteristics United have lacked in midfield — energy, physicality, ball recovery, defensive strength and the ability to carry possession forward.

But whether he is the missing piece will depend on how effectively those qualities fit into the team’s overall tactical structure.

A single midfielder cannot solve every problem at Old Trafford.

United still need consistency across the pitch, greater control of matches and a reliable attacking threat. Baleba can strengthen the foundation, but the players around him will also have to perform.

If he settles quickly and reproduces the form that made him so highly regarded at Brighton, however, the Cameroon international could become one of the most important pieces of United’s rebuilding project.

The move also represents another major step in Baleba’s own career.

He joined Brighton from French club Lille as a promising young midfielder. After developing in England and establishing himself in the Premier League, he has now earned a move to Manchester United.

The next challenge is significantly bigger.

At Old Trafford, potential will no longer be enough.

Baleba will be expected to deliver.

And if he can bring his strength, intensity, defensive discipline and progressive ball-carrying to the heart of Manchester United’s midfield, he could give the club something it has been searching for for years.

A midfielder capable of winning the battle in the middle of the pitch while also helping United control the game.

For now, the question remains open.

Is Carlos Baleba the missing piece Manchester United have been searching for — or is he simply another piece of a much bigger rebuild?

Only time will tell, but United have clearly identified the 22-year-old as a player capable of helping shape their future.
