Is DR Congo Ready to Add to Africa’s Numbers at the 2026 World Cup? Coach Sébastien Desabre names squad for crucial playoff

The Democratic Republic of Congo is on the verge of potentially ending a 52-year absence from football’s biggest stage, and all eyes are on the Leopards as head coach announced his squad for the decisive intercontinental playoff ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The announcement comes after DR Congo secured their place in the playoff by defeating in the African playoff final held in Morocco last November, a victory that reignited hope for fans and football followers across the continent.

Desabre, the French tactician, has opted for a squad that blends European experience with emerging talent, signaling the Leopards’ intent to challenge for a historic qualification. Among the most notable inclusions is , who returns to lead the attack, bringing vital goal-scoring ability to a team that will rely on precision and efficiency in front of goal. Supporting Wissa in attack are seasoned forwards Fiston Mayele, Simon Banza, and Cedric Bakambu, all players who have proven themselves in competitive leagues abroad and will be expected to deliver when it matters most.

The midfield combines physicality, creativity, and tactical discipline. Players such as Samuel Moutoussamy, Edo Kayembe, and Charles Pickel will be tasked with controlling the tempo of the game and providing the link between defence and attack. Wide players Grady Diangana and Theo Bongonda add pace, skill, and the ability to stretch opposing defences, ensuring DR Congo’s attacking options are varied and unpredictable.

Defensively, the Leopards are anchored by captain Chancel Mbemba, whose leadership and experience will be crucial in keeping a clean sheet under pressure. He is joined by a versatile defensive line including Axel Tuanzebe, Arthur Masuaku, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Dylan Batubinsika, and Jeremy Ngakia, all of whom bring a combination of European top-flight experience and international know-how. This defensive unit will need to be at its best to withstand the intensity and pressure of a high-stakes playoff match.

The goalkeepers Timothé Fayulu, Lionel Mpasi-Nzau, and Mathieu Epolo round out a squad that appears well-balanced, offering depth and reliability at every position. Their role will be vital, as playoff matches are often decided by narrow margins and require sharp focus and composure from the last line of defence.

The question now facing African football fans is whether this DR Congo side can deliver and add to the continent’s representation at the World Cup. The Leopards have not featured at a World Cup since 1974, and a successful playoff campaign would mark a historic return, boosting Africa’s presence on the global stage and inspiring a new generation of Congolese footballers.

With the squad officially named, attention now turns to how Desabre will approach the playoff tactically. Will he rely on experienced campaigners to provide stability, or will he integrate younger talents hungry to make their mark? The team’s preparation, strategy, and ability to handle pressure will be tested to the maximum in what is arguably the most important fixture in DR Congo’s football history.
