Ivory Coast have defeated Ghana 2-0 in the opening match of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, handing the Black Stars a difficult start to their Group C campaign at the Stade de la Paix in Bouaké.
The Elephants secured the victory through goals from Malick Yalcouyé and Franck Kessié, with the result giving the hosts all three points in a highly anticipated West African derby.
The encounter brought together two of Africa’s most successful national teams and two sides with a long history of intense competition. Ghana entered the fixture as four-time African champions, while Ivory Coast are three-time winners, most recently lifting the continental trophy in 2023.
The match was played at the Stade de la Paix in Bouaké, with Algerian referee Mustapha Ghorbal in charge. The fixture was the first Group C game for both nations as they began their quest to qualify for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which will be hosted jointly by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.
Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz was forced to make significant changes to his team because of a number of injuries and withdrawals.
Ghana went into the match without several important players, including captain Jordan Ayew, Antoine Semenyo and Mohammed Kudus, while other squad members were also unavailable.
Queiroz therefore turned to a relatively inexperienced attacking combination, handing starts to Christopher Bonsu Baah, Abdul Fatawu Issahaku, Ernest Nuamah and Brandon Thomas-Asante.
Lawrence Ati-Zigi started in goal, with Gideon Mensah, Jerome Opoku, Alexander Djiku and Kojo Oppong Peprah forming the defensive line.
Kwasi Sibo and Caleb Yirenkyi operated in midfield, while Fatawu Issahaku, Bonsu Baah and Nuamah provided support for Thomas-Asante.
The starting XI reflected Queiroz’s attempt to maintain Ghana’s competitiveness despite the absence of several established stars. The Ghana Football Association confirmed the selection before kick-off.
Ivory Coast coach Hervé Renard also named a strong starting side as he began his second spell in charge of the Elephants with a major competitive fixture.
Yahia Fofana started in goal, protected by Ghislain Konan, Evan Ndicka, Ousmane Diomande and Luck Zogbe.
Franck Kessié captained the side from midfield alongside Ibrahim Sangaré, with the young Malick Yalcouyé also playing an important role.
Nicolas Pepe, Ange-Yoan Bonny and Real Madrid youngster Yan Diomande formed the attacking unit.
Renard’s selection combined experienced players with younger talents as Ivory Coast began a new cycle under the French coach.
The first half was closely contested, with Ghana attempting to remain compact while looking for opportunities on the counterattack.
The Black Stars created moments around the Ivory Coast penalty area, but they struggled to turn their possession and attacking movements into a decisive breakthrough.
Ivory Coast gradually increased the pressure and eventually found the opening goal through Malick Yalcouyé.
The young midfielder struck late in the first half to put the Elephants ahead and give the home side a 1-0 advantage going into the interval. Reports place the goal around the 42nd minute.
The goal was particularly significant for Yalcouyé, who was among the young players brought into the Ivory Coast squad as part of Renard’s rebuilding process.
The hosts went into the break with the advantage, leaving Ghana with the task of finding an equaliser after the restart.
Ghana returned for the second half needing a much-improved attacking performance, but Ivory Coast continued to pose a threat.
The home side eventually extended its advantage when captain Franck Kessié found the net in the second half.
Kessié’s goal came around the 58th minute and put Ivory Coast 2-0 ahead, leaving Ghana facing a difficult final period of the match.
The goal also underlined the influence of the experienced midfielder, who provided leadership as well as a decisive contribution on the field.
With a two-goal cushion, Ivory Coast were able to manage the remainder of the contest and protect their advantage.
Despite attempts to get back into the game, Ghana could not find the goal needed to reduce the deficit.
The Black Stars introduced players from the bench as Queiroz looked for a way to change the direction of the match, but the Ivory Coast defence remained difficult to break down.
The hosts maintained their shape and saw out the closing stages without conceding.
When the final whistle sounded, Ivory Coast had completed a 2-0 victory and claimed maximum points from the opening Group C fixture. The result was confirmed by match-tracking data following the game.
The defeat means Ghana begin their 2027 AFCON qualification campaign without a point.
The result will increase the importance of the Black Stars’ next Group C fixture against The Gambia, which is scheduled for September 29 at the Accra Sports Stadium.
Ghana will now have to respond quickly, particularly because Ivory Coast have taken an early advantage in the group after beating one of their principal rivals.
The Black Stars’ immediate challenge will be to turn the disappointment in Bouaké into a positive response on home soil.
Queiroz had stressed before the match that Ghana travelled to Ivory Coast to compete rather than simply develop young players. He also acknowledged the difficulties created by the number of unavailable players but expressed confidence in those selected for the assignment.
The result adds another chapter to one of African football’s most historic rivalries.
Ghana and Ivory Coast have met numerous times in major African competitions, including two AFCON finals.
Ivory Coast defeated Ghana on penalties in the 1992 final and repeated the feat in the 2015 final after another goalless contest that was decided by a shootout.
The most recent meeting before Thursday’s qualifier was a 0-0 friendly draw in 2021.
Ghana’s four AFCON titles remain one more than Ivory Coast’s three, but the Elephants now have another important victory over their regional rivals, this time in the opening match of the 2027 qualifying campaign.
Ivory Coast’s 2-0 victory gives the Elephants three points and an early advantage in Group C.
Ghana, meanwhile, must regroup before welcoming The Gambia in Accra.
The group also includes Somalia, meaning both Ghana and Ivory Coast still have several matches ahead in the qualification race. Ghana’s next fixture therefore becomes particularly important as the Black Stars seek to recover from their opening-day setback.
The defeat also comes after Ghana missed the previous Africa Cup of Nations and makes qualification for the 2027 tournament an immediate priority for Queiroz and his squad.
For Ivory Coast, the victory gives Renard a winning start to his competitive return as national team coach and provides the Elephants with momentum heading into the remainder of the qualifying campaign.
