Jeremie Frimpong: No thoughts on Ghana as he states, ‘I don’t even watch Black Stars’

Jeremie Frimpong, an illustrious product of Manchester City’s academy, has carved a notable path through the ranks in the Netherlands, prompting speculation about a potential shift in nationality despite his extensive history with Dutch youth teams. The right-back, a stalwart at U19, U20, and U21 levels, recently marked his senior debut for the Netherlands in a compelling 2024 Euro qualifier against France in October.

In a reflective moment on his international journey, the 22-year-old conveyed his joy at earning the coveted senior cap for the Netherlands. “It was nice to finally make my debut. It was against France as well, so it was a nice game. I was really happy about it,” he shared in an insightful interview with Joy Sports.

Despite pledging allegiance to the Netherlands, Frimpong disclosed that the technical handlers of the Black Stars, Ghana’s national team, approached him for a potential nationality switch. Confirming the conversation, he asserted, “Yes, the coach called me. I had a conversation with him, but my mind was already made up.”

Pressed on whether he occasionally follows Ghana’s games, Frimpong reiterated his unwavering focus on the Netherlands, stating firmly, “No, I just focus on the Netherlands.” This resolute stance underscores his dedication to the Dutch national team.

Born to Ghanaian and Dutch parents, Frimpong has consistently voiced his preference for representing the Netherlands. In a forthright 2021 interview with De Telegraaf, he declared, “I was born in the Netherlands, so for me it’s simple: I want to play for Orange (Dutch national team).”

Embarking on his football journey at the tender age of nine within Manchester City’s esteemed academy, Frimpong took a significant stride in 2019 by joining the ranks of Scottish giants Celtic.

The next chapter unfolded in 2021 with a move to the Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen, where his versatility shone through with six goals and seven assists in all competitions this season. The dynamic right-back’s tale is one of commitment, talent, and a pivotal juncture in international football.
