Ghanaian defender Jerome Opoku delivered a crucial goal to help Istanbul Basaksehir secure European football next season, scoring the decisive goal in a 1-0 win over Kasimpasa on Sunday, May 18, 2025, in the Turkish Super Lig.
With just nine minutes left on the clock, Opoku reacted swiftly to bury a rebound from his own penalty, sealing a vital three points for his team. The result gives Basaksehir a four-point lead over sixth-placed Eyuspor, who have played one game more.
The victory effectively confirms Basaksehir’s qualification for the UEFA Europa Conference League next season. With two games remaining for Basaksehir and only one left for Eyuspor, even a final-day win for the latter would leave them a point behind — making it mathematically impossible to overtake the Istanbul-based side.
Since joining Basaksehir from Portuguese club Arouca, Opoku has proven to be a key asset at the heart of defence. In 31 league appearances this season, the towering centre-back has contributed three goals and two assists.
The England-born Ghanaian has attracted attention for his consistent performances and is widely expected to be named in the Black Stars squad for the upcoming Unity Cup in London.
