Jesse Bisiwu snubs Ghana as Belgium U21 stint ends with just 70 minutes of action

Jesse Bisiwu has concluded the latest international break with limited playing time for Belgium’s Under-21 national team, managing just 70 minutes across three matches despite being part of the squad for the fixtures against Belarus, Wales and Denmark.

The young talent, whose international future has attracted attention from Ghanaian football followers, has continued to represent Belgium at youth level, a development that reinforces the growing conversation surrounding his decision to snub Ghana in favour of pursuing his international career with the European nation.

Bisiwu’s involvement during the international break was limited, with the attacker featuring for only five minutes against Belarus before receiving a more substantial opportunity in the encounter against Wales. He played 65 minutes in that fixture, offering him another chance to gain experience within Belgium’s youth national team setup.

However, his involvement ended there, as he remained an unused substitute when Belgium faced Denmark in their third match of the international window.

The figures from the three fixtures paint a clear picture of Bisiwu’s limited participation. Out of the three matches played by Belgium U21, he featured in only two, accumulating 70 minutes on the pitch while watching the entire encounter against Denmark from the bench.

His five-minute appearance against Belarus represented a particularly brief opportunity to influence proceedings, while the 65 minutes against Wales accounted for almost all his playing time during the international break. His omission from the action against Denmark meant he could not add to that tally.

For Ghana, Bisiwu’s continued involvement with Belgium brings renewed attention to the country’s efforts to attract eligible dual-nationality players who could potentially strengthen the Black Stars in the future.

Ghana has increasingly focused on identifying talented players with Ghanaian heritage who are developing in European football. Such players can provide additional options for the national team, particularly when they possess the technical ability, tactical awareness and competitive experience required to perform at the highest level.

Bisiwu is among the young players whose international choices have generated interest, given the possibility of representing Ghana alongside his opportunities within Belgian football. His decision to continue featuring for Belgium at youth level has therefore become an important talking point among supporters who would have preferred to see him pursue an international pathway with Ghana.

Nevertheless, his limited minutes during the latest international break raise questions about the immediate opportunities available to him within Belgium’s Under-21 team. While he was included in the squad, his participation was restricted to a brief appearance against Belarus and a longer spell against Wales, before he was left on the bench against Denmark.

For a young footballer seeking to establish himself internationally, regular playing time can be an important factor in development. Competitive minutes provide opportunities to improve match fitness, build confidence, demonstrate tactical understanding and convince coaches that a player deserves a more prominent role.

Bisiwu’s experience during this international window was therefore mixed. His appearance against Wales gave him a reasonable opportunity to contribute, but the five minutes against Belarus and his unused-substitute status against Denmark limited his overall involvement.

However, limited minutes during a single international break do not necessarily determine a player’s long-term prospects. Coaches may have different tactical plans for individual matches, while competition for places, squad rotation and the specific demands of each opponent can influence selection decisions.

Belgium’s Under-21 setup remains a competitive environment, and Bisiwu will need to make the most of the opportunities presented to him if he hopes to secure a more regular place in the team.

For Ghanaian supporters, the situation also highlights the uncertainty surrounding the international futures of young dual-nationality players. A footballer may be eligible to represent Ghana but choose to develop within another country’s youth system, leaving Ghanaian fans hoping that circumstances could eventually change.

Bisiwu’s decision to snub Ghana and continue his international journey with Belgium will remain a subject of discussion as his career progresses. His latest involvement, however, demonstrates that being part of a national team squad does not automatically guarantee substantial playing time.

The key question now is whether he can turn his involvement with Belgium U21 into a more consistent role in future international windows.

With only 70 minutes accumulated across three fixtures, Bisiwu will be looking to make a stronger impression when the next opportunity arrives. More regular appearances could help him strengthen his position within the Belgian setup, while continued competition for places will require him to demonstrate his quality whenever called upon.

For Ghana, his situation serves as another reminder of the challenges involved in convincing eligible young talents to commit to the Black Stars before their international careers become firmly established elsewhere.

Bisiwu’s international break in numbers:

  • Belgium U21 vs Belarus: 5 minutes played.
  • Belgium U21 vs Wales: 65 minutes played.
  • Belgium U21 vs Denmark: Unused substitute.
  • Total appearances: 2.
  • Total minutes: 70.

Bisiwu has ended the international break with limited minutes for Belgium U21, but his continued involvement with the European side keeps the spotlight on his decision to snub Ghana and pursue opportunities with Belgium.
