João Pedro Junqueira de Jesus, widely known as João Pedro, is a talented Brazilian professional footballer who currently plays as a forward for Premier League side Chelsea and the Brazil national team.

Born on 26 September 2001 in Ribeirão Preto, São Paulo, Brazil, João Pedro has risen from humble beginnings to become one of the most exciting young attackers in English football.

Standing at 1.82 metres (6 ft 0 in), the Brazilian is known for his pace, agility, and clinical finishing, often playing as a striker or second forward but also capable of operating on the wings.

Early Life and Parents

João Pedro was born to José Carlos Junqueira and Flávia Junqueira in the football-loving city of Ribeirão Preto. His father, José Carlos, was a semi-professional footballer who played in Brazil’s lower leagues, while his mother provided strong family support to ensure João Pedro could focus on his career. His father was imprisoned when João Pedro was young, a personal tragedy that shaped his early life. He grew up idolising Brazilian legends such as Ronaldinho, Ronaldo Nazário, and Neymar.

Club Career

Fluminense (2019–2020)

João Pedro’s professional career began with Fluminense in Brazil, where he joined their youth academy in 2016. He quickly rose through the ranks, and in September 2019, he made his senior debut in the Brazilian Série A. His flair, dribbling, and ability to score spectacular goals earned him attention from European clubs early on.

Watford (2020–2023)

In October 2018, Watford agreed to sign João Pedro from Fluminense, but the move became official in January 2020 after he turned 18.

  • At Watford, he adapted quickly to English football, playing in both the Premier League and the Championship.
  • He became one of the club’s key attacking players, scoring crucial goals in their promotion push.
  • His standout season came in 2022/23, where he registered double figures in goals and assists despite Watford’s struggles.

Brighton & Hove Albion (2023–2025)

In June 2023, Brighton signed João Pedro for a club-record fee reported to be around £30 million.

  • In his debut season, he impressed with his intelligent movement, link-up play, and finishing.
  • He became a vital part of Brighton’s attack under Roberto De Zerbi, contributing both goals and assists in domestic and European competitions.

Chelsea (2025–Present)

In a blockbuster move, Chelsea signed him in July 2025. The deal, reportedly worth£55 million plus £5 million in add-ons, spans seven to eight years, tying him to Stamford Bridge until 2032 or 2033

International Career

João Pedro has represented Brazil at youth levels and earned his first senior call-up in 2023. He is seen as part of the new generation of Brazilian talent poised to lead the national team in future tournaments.

Style of Play

João Pedro is a versatile forward who can operate as a striker, second striker, or winger.

  • Strengths: Excellent dribbling, pace, creativity, intelligent off-the-ball movement, and composure in front of goal.
  • Role: Often drops deep to link play, capable of both creating and finishing chances.
  • Comparison: His playing style has drawn comparisons to Roberto Firmino for his work rate and technical skill, and to Neymar for his flair.

Career Stats (as of August 2025)

  • Fluminense: 29 appearances, 7 goals
  • Watford: 109 appearances, 24 goals
  • Brighton & Hove Albion: 48 appearances, 18 goals
  • Chelsea: 5 appearances, 5 goals
  • Brazil: 5 appearances, 1 goal

Transfers

  1. Fluminense → Watford – £2.5 million (2018 agreement, completed 2020)
  2. Watford → Brighton & Hove Albion – £30 million (June 2023)
  3. Brighton  → Chelsea – £55m

Net Worth and Salary

João Pedro’s net worth is estimated at around £5 million as of 2025, largely from his football contracts, performance bonuses, and endorsements. At Chelsea, he reportedly earns around £120,000 per week.

Personal Life and Girlfriend

João Pedro is known to keep his personal life relatively private. However, he has been linked with Brazilian model Mel Maia in the past. He enjoys spending time with family, travelling, and fashion.

Honours

  • EFL Championship runner-up: 2021 (Watford)
  • Copa do Brasil U17: 2018 (Fluminense Youth)
  • FIFA Club World Cup: 2025 (Chelsea)
