Ghana U20 striker Joseph Opoku opened his goalscoring account in the Belgian Pro League on Saturday night, helping Zulte Waregem stage a thrilling 2-1 comeback win over Sporting Charleroi.
The 19-year-old, who has been steadily growing in influence since his top-flight debut, struck in the 62nd minute to cancel out Charleroi’s early lead before a stoppage-time winner secured all three points for the newly-promoted side.
Charleroi went ahead in the 15th minute when German midfielder Patrick Pflücke finished from an Etienne Camara assist. The hosts’ evening grew complicated just nine minutes later, as Syrian defender Aiham Ousou received a straight red card, forcing them to play with ten men.
Opoku, lively throughout, took full advantage in the second half, showing composure to fire home the equaliser. His strike shifted momentum firmly towards Waregem, who pressed relentlessly in search of a winner.
That breakthrough arrived in dramatic fashion deep into added time when veteran forward Jelle Van Vossen converted from a Nigerian striker Anosike Ementa assist, sealing Waregem’s third league win of the season.
Opoku played 77 minutes before making way for Albanian midfielder Serxho Ujka. His compatriot Raymond Asante, meanwhile, remained on the bench for Charleroi.
The young Black Satellites forward has now made eight appearances this campaign, contributing one goal and three assists, underlining his growing role in Waregem’s attacking setup.
