Ghana international Kamaldeen Sulemana has made a welcome return to competitive action after spending several months on the sidelines with a knee injury, featuring in Atalanta’s 2-2 draw against Fiorentina in the Italian Serie A on Thursday night.
The 24-year-old winger marked his comeback by coming off the bench in the 84th minute, replacing Nicola Zalewski as Atalanta shared the spoils with Fiorentina.
Sulemana had been sidelined for several months after sustaining a knee injury during a pre-season friendly against German side Schalke 04, ruling him out of action for an extended period.
Medical examinations diagnosed the injury as a second-degree tear of the medial collateral ligament (MCL) in his left knee, forcing the Ghanaian attacker to undergo an extensive rehabilitation programme.
His return represents a significant boost for Atalanta, who will be looking to benefit from his pace, dribbling ability and attacking creativity as they seek to strengthen their offensive options for the remainder of the campaign.
Sulemana joined the Italian side from Southampton last summer and enjoyed an encouraging debut season, recording three goals and two assists in 37 appearances across all competitions.
The former Southampton winger will now focus on regaining full match fitness and gradually working his way back into the starting line-up as the season progresses.
His comeback will also be encouraging news for the Black Stars, with Ghana expected to benefit from his attacking qualities when he returns to full fitness.
After months of rehabilitation and recovery, Sulemana’s appearance against Fiorentina represents an important milestone in his efforts to get his career back on track and make a stronger contribution to Atalanta’s campaign.
