President John Dramani Mahama has expressed confidence in the future of the Black Stars, insisting the current squad has the quality to compete for major honours if it is kept together and given the necessary support.
The President made the remarks following Ghana’s encouraging campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where the Black Stars progressed to the Round of 32 for the first time since their memorable quarter-final run in South Africa in 2010.
Speaking during an inspection tour of the Ho Sports Stadium, Mahama commended the team’s performances, noting that they exceeded expectations after many had predicted an early group-stage exit.
“The Black Stars did well; nobody gave them a chance. People predicted that they would crash out at the group stage, but they managed to get into the Round of 32,” he said.
Mahama stressed that continuity within both the playing squad and technical team will be key to Ghana’s future success, urging the country to maintain the current foundation ahead of upcoming international competitions.
“I am sure that if we keep this team and we persuade the coach to continue to work with the team, by the time of the next AFCON and World Cup, we will have a team that can claim the championship in any of those two competitions,” he added.
The Black Stars will now shift their attention to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, where they have been drawn in Group C alongside Ivory Coast, The Gambia and Somalia as they look to secure a place at the continental tournament.
