The Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Henry Asante Twum, has explained the rationale behind the appointment of Black Queens Head Coach Kim Lars Björkegren as part of the Black Stars’ technical team.

Speaking exclusively on Akoma 87.9 FM, Asante Twum said the decision was based on Kim’s proven track record and the value he continues to bring to Ghana football.

“With what Kim has achieved so far, he has justified his expertise, and we believe he has something extra to contribute to the team. For now, his full concentration is on the Black Queens, and after March, he will turn his attention to the Black Stars,” he stated.
Asante Twum revealed that the Swedish coach is currently in Ghana to continue preparations with the Black Queens ahead of the upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

“Kim is in Ghana to continue with the Black Queens’ preparation for the Women’s AFCON. The mission is clear: to qualify for the World Cup. After the tournament in March, he will then join the Black Stars,” he added.

The Ghana Football Association earlier announced Björkegren’s inclusion in the Black Stars’ technical team as part of efforts to strengthen the national setup ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

According to the FA, Kim’s appointment follows his impressive achievements with the Black Queens. The Swedish coach guided the team to a bronze medal finish at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations and successfully led them to qualification for the 2026 WAFCON, which he will also oversee.

The Association believes his experience, tactical knowledge, and leadership qualities will be an added advantage to the Black Stars as they prepare for crucial international assignments.

With both national teams targeting World Cup qualification, the GFA remains confident that Björkegren’s dual role will positively impact Ghana’s football ambitions on the continental and global stage.
