The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has ordered the Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, to revoke the appointments of 17 staff members who were recruited without following the proper procedures.
The directive was given on February 23 during a meeting between the Minister, the NSA Board and the Director General. The meeting followed concerns that the recruitment process did not receive the necessary approval from the Public Services Commission and the Ministry of Finance.
Before the Minister’s intervention, the NSA Board had already instructed Mr Ankrah to annul the appointments. The Board explained that some of the roles filled — including the position of Chief Operations Officer — are not part of the NSA’s officially approved organisational structure. According to public sector rules, job vacancies must be publicly advertised and applicants must go through a formal vetting process before they are placed on the government payroll.
Reports indicate that the issue created tension between the Board and management. Questions were also raised about the payment of the affected staff, as their salaries were reportedly not processed through the Authority’s official accounts.
The Minister’s decision has now brought clarity to the matter, and the Director General is expected to act in line with the directive.
The National Sports Authority currently has about 121 staff at its headquarters as ongoing administrative reforms continue within the institution.
