Asante Kotoko IMC Chairman, Nana Apinkra, has raised concerns over the Ghana Football Association’s (GFA) decision to reject Baba Yara Stadium for Ghana Premier League (GPL) matches while allowing games to be played at the T&A Stadium.
Speaking to Oyerepa Sports, Nana Apinkra questioned the inconsistency in stadium approvals, pointing out logistical and security challenges at the Tarkwa-based T&A Stadium.
“How does the T&A Stadium meet the standards to host GPL games, yet Baba Yara does not? At T&A, players and officials have to get down at the entrance and walk to the stadium before playing their matches. Are these the enhanced safety and security standards we are talking about?” he asked.
His remarks come after reports that the GFA Club Licensing Board had deemed Baba Yara Stadium unfit for GPL matches ahead of the league’s resumption on March 7. This decision has left Kotoko uncertain about hosting their upcoming home fixture against Legon Cities.
The GFA recently introduced new safety measures following the tragic stabbing of a Kotoko fan in Nsoatre. However, Apinkra’s concerns suggest that clubs are questioning the fairness and consistency of these regulations.
With just days before the league resumes, it remains unclear whether Baba Yara Stadium will be reinstated for use or if Kotoko will need to find an alternative venue.
