Asante Kotoko striker Kwame Opoku believes that playing for the Porcupine Warriors is a solid foundation for any player aspiring to join Ghana’s senior national team, the Black Stars.
Opoku, who earned his first call-up to the national team under former coach CK Akonnor, recently made a return to the squad for the Unity Cup games in London under current coach Otto Addo. The 26-year-old featured in Ghana’s 2-1 defeat to Nigeria, playing 45 minutes in the match.
Speaking to Kotoko’s media team, Opoku explained that the demands and expectations at Kotoko mirror those at the national level.
“Me having an opportunity to play with the national team feels like I don’t see any difference between the two because Kotoko is a big club,” he said.
“Playing for Kotoko actually prepares you to play for the national team. Even at the national team, I tell them Kotoko is Ghana’s Barcelona… because it’s a team that everybody wishes to play for, as long as you’re playing in Ghana.”
Opoku returned to Kotoko during the second half of the 2024/25 season and made an immediate impact, registering 11 goal contributions in 17 appearances.
