Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku has admitted that the decision by Inaki Williams to retire from international football left the association disappointed and concerned.
The Athletic Club forward officially ended his career with the Black Stars after making 28 appearances for Ghana, scoring two goals following his switch of allegiance from Spain in 2022.
Williams, who had previously earned one senior cap for Spain, went on to represent Ghana at major tournaments including the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire, and the 2026 FIFA World Cup before calling time on his international career.
Speaking to Asempa FM, Okraku revealed that the Ghana FA was affected by the striker’s decision but said understanding Williams’ personal circumstances helped explain his choice.
“I was disturbed about his decision. Not only me, but the entire Football Association. However, when you hear him out, you will understand his situation,” Okraku said.
The GFA president explained that Williams had been dealing with recurring injuries and physical discomfort, which had also influenced how he was managed by his club.
“He has been playing through a lot of pain and injuries, and even at club level, he is being managed,” he added.
Despite his relatively short international career with Ghana, Williams played an important role during his time with the Black Stars, bringing experience and quality to the national team’s attack.
His departure marks the end of a chapter for the 32-year-old forward, who made the decision after years of balancing club commitments, injuries and international football demands.
