List of Bundesliga teams to play in Europe 2022/23 with 5 teams in Champions League

The 2022/23 football season offers a new window of opportunity for German football clubs. Eight Bundesliga teams would play in Europe, the highest for German clubs.

 

Eintracht Frankfurt’s Europa League Final victory over the Rangers had meant that Germany would have five teams in the Champions League alone.

 

 

The usual four plus three saw an increase in participation since the creation of the UEFA Conference League.

 

So who are the German Bundesliga teams in European football for the 2022/23 season?

 

Champions League
Bayern Munich
Bayern Munich wrapped up their 10th consecutive league title following the Der Klassiker 3-1 defeat of Borussia Dortmund at the Allianz Arena.

 

Bayern Munich is the most successful German team in the Champions League, with six titles. The club’s most recent was in 2020.

 

Borussia Dortmund
A dismal performance ended Dortmund’s title hopes and took a different turn for The Yellow Wall, who had to fight back to finish second.

 

Dortmund is one of the most consistent teams in the UCL, along with Bayern Munich, although last season wasn’t the best for the club.

 

Bayer Leverkusen
After an impressive season, Leverkusen were rewarded with a place in Europe. ‘The Company’s Eleven’ were runners up in the 2001–02 Champions League Final.

 

RB Leipzig
Ever-present since their promotion to the German top flight. Leipzig sealed a return to competition.

 

Eintracht Frankfurt
Frankfurt won their first European trophy in 40-years after a penalty shootout against the Rangers. The Eagles increased Germany’s number of entrants to five for the first time.

 

UEFA Europa League
Union Berlin
Union Berlin raced to finish fifth on the log after a remarkable finish in the Conference League last season. The Union became the first German team to play in the newly created UEFA Football competition.

 

SC Freiburg
Putting back the disappointment of failing to qualify for the Champions League directly, Freiburg would play in Europa League instead.

 

UEFA Europa Conference League
1. FC Köln
FC Cologne returns to the European scene for the first time since 2018. Head coach Steffen Baumgart did a great job finishing the season on a high level.
