“Local players in the GPL should earn at least Gh¢12,000 to Gh¢13,000 to make a good living” – Enoch Morrison

Former Asante Kotoko midfielder, Enoch Morrison, has lamented the low salaries paid to players in the Ghanaian topflight, stating that local players should earn at least Gh¢12,000 or Gh¢13,000 to make a good living.

Morrison, who joined Kenyan giants Gor Mahia ahead of Hearts of Oak, revealed that he was offered a better salary by Gor Mahia than what he could have earned at Hearts of Oak.

He attributed his decision to switch to East Africa to the lucrative offer, which he had never received in his entire spell in the Ghanaian topflight.

“I would have joined Hearts of Oak if they had offered me a salary that was even remotely comparable to what Gor Mahia is paying me. Our salaries in Ghana are extremely low. The salaries that the foreign clubs offer us are not so high that Ghanaian clubs cannot compete,” Morrison said.

In an interview with Kumasi-based Akoma FM, Morrison expressed his frustration with the lack of financial support from Ghanaian clubs, saying it’s not wise for players to continue playing for these clubs without being able to support themselves financially.

“Ghanaian Clubs ought to assist footballer, as we are enduring hardships. It would have been a wise move to change careers if, after playing for Kotoko and Hearts, I am unable to support myself financially through my football career.”

“I was unable to make a decent living at Kotoko with my salary.

He suggested that local players at Hearts or Kotoko should earn at least Gh¢12,000 or Gh¢13,000 so they can make a good living from their football careers.

“I suggest that a local player at Hearts or Kotoko earn at least Gh¢12000 or Gh¢13000 so he can make a good living from it. During my time at Kotoko, no local player was given such amount.

“The clubs should assist us, because we are truly in need”, he concluded

Morrison made 31 appearances, scoring three goals and providing two assists in his first season with Kotoko, before building on that form in his second campaign, where he made 22 appearances, scoring once and providing two assists. He has already started preseason with Gor Mahia and is looking forward to establishing himself as a mainstay before the commencement of the 2024/25 football season.
