John Dramani Mahama has called for improved transparency and consistency in the disclosure of expenditure on sports, emphasizing the need for accountability in the use of public funds.

He made this known during a fundraising event held on March 20 at the Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City, where stakeholders gathered as the Ghana national football team continue preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The President’s remarks follow concerns raised by Kurt Okraku, who recently questioned what he described as intense scrutiny over the team’s budget. In response, Mahama stressed that both citizens and corporate partners deserve clear and consistent information on how funds are utilized in the sports sector.

He noted that transparency is essential to building trust and attracting investment, insisting that Ghanaians have a right to know how national resources are spent.

Mahama also praised Kofi Adams for efforts made so far, but urged authorities to maintain and improve the standard of financial reporting in sports administration.
The event was attended by several government officials, including Thomas Nyarko Ampem.

Meanwhile, on the field, Ghana has been placed in Group L for the 2026 World Cup alongside England national football team, Panama national football team, and Croatia national football team.

As part of their preparations, the Black Stars will engage in international friendlies against Austria national football team and Germany national football team, ahead of the tournament which will be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
