Portuguese manager Carlos Queiroz was officially unveiled as the new Black Stars coach in Accra on Thursday, April 23, at the Alisa Hotel by the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

The 73-year-old has been handed a four-month contract ahead of the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico.

Queiroz replaced Otto Addo, who was sacked in March after Black Stars’ back-to-back defeats against Austria and Germany.

The former Real Madrid coach has been tasked with improving the team and making an impact ahead of the 23rd edition of the global showpiece.

Here are 10 key things he said during his unveiling:

1. I am ready for the job as Black Stars head coach

2. This will be the most challenging job in my career

3. I am a winning coach who is not concerned about the style of play

4. I want to see my players fight as a team without the ball and adapt with the ball

5. My challenge is to win the next game and win the next game

6. We have to bring in the right players and make the right decisions

7. I cannot make promises, but I can assure you that we will be ready against Panama

8. We will create fair opportunities for local players

9. I will select players who are capable, experienced and fit

10. Five new backroom staff will join the technical team, while John Pailtsil, Fatawu Dauda and Desmond Ofei will keep their respective roles

Ghana is making their fifth appearance at the FIFA World Cup for 2026 and has been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia, and Panama.

The Black Stars open their campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.

Queiroz has been tasked with steering Ghana beyond the group stage, following group-stage exits in 2014 and 2022, as expectations rise for a stronger showing on football’s biggest stage.
