Mali legend Frederic Kanoute has thrown his weight behind Ghanaian forward Inaki Williams as a top contender for Africa’s best player of the year award.
Kanoute, a former Sevilla star and 2007 CAF African Best Player, believes that Inaki’s impressive performances for Athletic Club this season make him a strong candidate for the prestigious accolade.
Inaki had a stellar campaign, helping Athletic Club win the Copa del Rey and scoring 14 goals with 5 assists in 39 matches. Kanoute places Inaki in the same league as Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah and Ademola Lookman, highlighting his exceptional talent.
“It’s difficult for me to give a name because Inaki Williams did well and had a fantastic season at Athletic,” Kanoute told 3Sports. “Maybe I will say Lookman, Salah, and Williams.”
Last year’s award was claimed by Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen, but Kanoute’s endorsement of Inaki as a top contender has added fuel to the debate about who will take home the award this year.
