Danish-born Ghanaian forward Malik Pimpong found the back of the net for FC Midtjylland U19, but his goal was not enough to prevent their elimination from the UEFA Youth League after a 4-1 defeat to FC Köln on Wednesday night.
Pimpong — the son of former Black Stars striker Razak Pimpong — continued to follow in his father’s footsteps with another promising display. He struck early in the second half to level the game, but the joy was short-lived as the German champions responded almost immediately.
Köln took the lead midway through the first half through Fynn Schenten, and although Pimpong equalised just after the restart, the visitors quickly regained control. Kristiyan Irmiev restored Köln’s advantage in the 50th minute before Schenten completed his brace with 25 minutes left.
With eight minutes to play, Jonathan Friemel sealed the win, giving Köln a 4-1 victory on the night and a 5-2 win on aggregate to progress in the competition.
Despite the defeat, Pimpong’s performance was a bright spot for Midtjylland. The young attacker, who has already represented Denmark at youth level, remains eligible to switch allegiance and represent Ghana in the future.
