Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has reserved glowing praise for Ghanaian forward Antoine Semenyo ahead of Manchester City’s Carabao Cup semifinal first leg.

Speaking ahead of Tuesday night’s clash at St James’ Park, Howe highlighted the impact of City’s recent signing, describing Semenyo as an outstanding addition to Pep Guardiola’s squad.

Semenyo completed a £64 million transfer to Manchester City earlier this month, committing to a five-and-a-half-year deal, signaling the club’s long-term faith in his abilities. The 26-year-old wasted no time making an impression, scoring a goal and providing an assist on his debut during City’s emphatic 10-1 FA Cup victory over Exeter City.

Howe, a self-proclaimed admirer of the Ghanaian international, praised Semenyo’s quality and early impact.

“Antoine’s had an incredible season. I’m a big admirer of his and he scored on his debut, so fair play to him. I think Man City have signed a very, very good player,” Howe said.

Semenyo is expected to feature for City against Newcastle despite having played in the Carabao Cup earlier in the season with Bournemouth, following a rule change allowing him to represent his new club.

Newcastle now face the task of containing a player brimming with confidence as they aim to secure a strong position in the semifinal tie. Kick-off is scheduled for 20:00 GMT, with the return leg to follow later this month, as both sides chase a coveted spot at Wembley.
