PSV Eindhoven sporting director Marcel Brands has indicated that Liverpool is a potential destination for Cody Gakpo, who is tipped to complete a high-profile transfer in the next two transfer windows.
Manchester United have been strongly linked with the Netherlands forward since Erik ten Hag took charge, but he could face a nightmare outcome.
United agreed personal terms with Gakpo in the summer as Ten Hag pushed for attacking reinforcements in the final few weeks of the transfer window.
However, the Dutch coach instead opted for an £85million reunion with Ajax winger Antony, prompting the PSV star to remain for the 2022/23 season.
Gakpo has pushed his summer disappointment aside by producing the most prolific campaign of his young career, registering 13 goals and 17 assists in 24 games in all competitions for the Eredivisie giants.
And his stock has risen further during the World Cup, scoring the opener in both of the Netherlands’ Group A games.
His international form in Qatar has only intensified speculation surrounding his future, with a Premier League switch widely considered his most likely decision.
And Brands has poured fuel onto the fire by talking up Anfield as Gakpo’s destination.
