Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has heaped praise on young midfielder Kobbie Mainoo after his crucial role in the club’s FA Cup victory over Manchester City.
Mainoo was instrumental in the Red Devils’ impressive 2-1 win against Manchester City in the FA Cup final on Saturday afternoon. The 19-year-old midfielder played the entire match and was a key factor in United’s success.
The Red Devils took the lead in the first half when Alejandro Garnacho capitalized on a defensive error by Josko Gvardiol to score an easy goal. Manchester United doubled their advantage at Wembley Stadium when Bruno Fernandes provided a clever assist to Mainoo, who calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner.
Although Belgian-born Ghanaian winger Jeremy Doku scored for Manchester City, it was not enough to secure victory, and Manchester United clinched the title.
After the game, Rooney, Manchester United’s all-time top scorer, praised Mainoo for his performance. “The composure he has shown on the ball, for such a young lad, has been excellent,” Rooney said. “It’s so good to see a player from the academy coming through and dictating the games for Manchester United. He’s had some moments where he’s struggled, but I think this afternoon he’s been absolutely brilliant.”
Mainoo has also been named in England’s Euro 2024 provisional squad and will be hoping to make the final cut for the tournament scheduled for next month in Germany.
