Former Black Stars and Asante Kotoko defender Emmanuel Ampiah has urged footballers to be mindful of their choice of life partners, advising them to marry women who genuinely care about their future rather than those attracted solely by wealth and material possessions.
Speaking in an interview with Tony Muntana on Kessben TV, Ampiah reflected on his own experiences and warned young athletes about the dangers of choosing a partner for the wrong reasons.
Having enjoyed a successful career both locally and internationally, Ampiah is well aware of the temptations that come with fame and fortune. He revealed that he had encountered women who were more interested in his financial status than in building a genuine relationship.
“I’ve had women try to come after my properties. When they see success and money, they think that’s all that matters. But true love isn’t about what you have—it’s about who you are and what you can build together,” Ampiah shared.
He emphasized that many footballers, especially those at the peak of their careers, attract attention from individuals with ulterior motives. According to him, some women are drawn to the financial perks of being with a footballer, but when the money or career fades, so does their commitment.
“As a footballer, you need to marry someone who believes in your journey—who will stand by you during the highs and lows. Those who are only after your wealth won’t be there when things change,” he advised.
Ampiah further stressed the importance of finding a partner who values companionship and shared aspirations over superficial gains.
“Marry someone who will stay when things are tough, not just when you’re at the top of your game. That’s the only way to ensure your relationship stands the test of time,” he concluded.
His message serves as a cautionary tale for young footballers navigating relationships amid the pressures and distractions of professional sports.
