In a startling revelation, ex-Hearts of Oak manager Martin Koopman has thrown the status of the team into controversy by asserting that they are no longer a ‘big club’ in Ghana.
Despite their current high standing in the league, Koopman dismissed it as a mere facade, describing it as a “paper thing.”
During an interview, the Dutch gaffer candidly shared that the Phobians, though perceived as the best club on paper, fall short in reality. Koopman pinpointed the lack of balance in the team as a major hurdle during his tenure, emphasizing the absence of strikers and wingers despite having a solid defense and midfield.
”They think they are the best club in Ghana. On paper yes, but that’s not true. We had a young team and no experience…Actually, we missed balance in our team. We had a very good defense, a very good midfield but we missed strikers and wingers,” he told Ghanasportspage.com
Expressing his frustration, Koopman disclosed, “Every time I said that everybody was not happy, but it was the truth. And it’s not easy to tell the truth against the board and against the fans, but that was the reality at the moment for Hearts of Oak.”
Having managed the team for three months with just two wins in ten matches, Koopman’s controversial remarks shed light on the challenges faced during his brief stint at the helm of Hearts of Oak.
