Club Career
Early Career
Mathis Amougou developed an interest in football as a child, often accompanying his elder brother to training sessions in Sevran. However, he was initially unable to register with a club due to his young age.
After his family moved to La Ferté-Gaucher, he began his football journey with local club Entente Brie Est in 2012, where he spent two seasons. In 2014, he joined Torcy, a well-known youth development club. During his time at Torcy, he was also enrolled at the prestigious INF Clairefontaine academy, further honing his skills.
Saint-Étienne
Amougou later joined Saint-Étienne’s youth academy in July 2021. After a year in the youth ranks, he was promoted to the club’s second team, competing in Championnat National 3.
In April 2023, midway through his first senior season, Amougou signed his first professional contract, penning a two-year deal with the club. He made his senior debut on 13 January 2024, featuring in a 0–0 draw against Laval in Ligue 2.
Following his debut, Amougou quickly established himself as a key player for Saint-Étienne, becoming a regular starter during the first half of the 2024–25 Ligue 1 season.
Chelsea
On 3 February 2025, Amougou signed an eight-year contract with Premier League club Chelsea for a reported €15 million transfer fee.
International Career
Of Cameroonian descent, Amougou is eligible to represent both France and Cameroon at the international level.
In 2022, after impressive performances for Saint-Étienne’s youth team, French youth coach Jean-Luc Vannuchi called him up for a double-header against Germany. He made his France U16 debut in the second game.
Despite making only one appearance for the U16s, Amougou continued to progress and became a key player at the U17 and U18 levels. He was later selected for the 2023 FIFA U-17 World Cup, where he played a crucial role.
In France’s second group match against South Korea, Amougou scored a 2nd-minute goal to secure a 1–0 victory, ensuring France advanced to the knockout stages.
