The Mauritanian Football Association and the Mauritanian Premier League Board have given the green light for the Sudanese giants Al Hilal and Al Merriekh to take part in the Mauritanian Ligue 1 starting from the 2024/25 season.
Football in Sudan is suspended due to political instability in the country. The two biggest clubs Al Hilal and Al Merreikh have been welcomed by Mauritanian authorities to take part in their Ligue 1 with all expenses catered for domestically and in the CAF Champions League.
Al Hilal played their CAF Champions League home games in Dar es Salaam in Tanzania in the 2023-24 season due to war in Sudan.
The two Sudanese clubs had planned to join the Tanzanian Liga Kuu Bara but were not given the green light by the Tanzanian FA and have decided to enjoy themselves in the Mauritanian top flight.
The Mauritanian FA and the Sudanese clubs have informed CAF of their decision and are now awaiting approval from the Continent’s governing body.
