Former Black Stars head coach, Charles Kwablan Akonnor, believes Ghana could have done better at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations if he had been allowed to lead the team.
Ghana recorded its worst performance ever at the AFCON in Cameroon after picking up just one point from games against Morocco, Gabon and Comoros.
Akonnor was dismissed as the head coach of the team three months before the start of the competition and in an interview with Joy Sports, said being in charge of the team at the continental competition would have been a dream come true for him.
“[Being the head coach at the 2021 AFCON] was a dream but one way or the other, somebody shut it down, who that person is, I don’t know,” he said.
“I wouldn’t say so [I would have done better than what Milovan Rajevac did], but I had a plan and if that plan had worked, maybe we would have done better than we did.
“At least, the FA should have allowed me to go to the AFCON and come back because my contract was even running out. I was hurt but I am better now.”
In his 19 months stint with the Black Stars, Akonnor won four games, including two in the 2021 AFCON qualifies while also losing four and drawing two.
