In the spotlight: Mexico’s Home Advantage at Bank of America Stadium Overpowers Ghana – Insights from Chris Hughton
On October 15, 2023, at 9:27 AM, Black Stars head coach, Chris Hughton, pointed out that Mexico’s familiarity with the Bank of America Stadium pitch in Charlotte, USA, played a role in his team’s 2-0 defeat to the North Americans in an international friendly held in the early hours of Sunday.
Ghana suffered a loss, ending Hughton’s unbeaten streak as the head coach. During the post-match press conference, Hughton acknowledged that Mexico presented a formidable challenge due to their comfort on the pitch.
He stated, “I think we knew we were up against a very good Mexican team playing at home on a surface that they are used to so we knew it was going to be a tough opposition,” Hughton said.
Hughton further reflected on the match, noting, “I thought in the first half period we coped well even though we didn’t create the amount of chances that we would have liked to have done but I think we had reasonable good control of the game.”
In the second half, Mexico took the lead in the 57th minute with a goal by Hirving Lozano, and later, in the 72nd minute, Uriel Antuna doubled their advantage. These goals were a result of Mexico’s ability to exploit Ghana’s defensive weaknesses.
The Black Stars will face the United States next, in a match scheduled for Wednesday at 12:30 A.M. at the Geodis Park in Tennessee.
