“Michael Essien has the potential” – Sammy Kuffuor tips Ghana legend for top coaching career

Former Ghana international Samuel Kuffuor has thrown his support behind compatriot Michael Essien, expressing confidence that the ex-Chelsea star can build a successful coaching career at the highest level.

Kuffuor’s backing comes amid the impressive rise of Vincent Kompany, who has made a strong impact as head coach of Bayern Munich, guiding the club to Bundesliga success and a deep UEFA Champions League run.

Reflecting on Kompany’s influence, Kuffuor noted that his achievements are opening doors for more Black coaches across global football, creating opportunities for the next generation.

“Vincent Kompany is one of the top young coaches. He has opened so many doors, and he’s young,” Kuffuor said. “It’s probably an opportunity for Michael Essien, who is now into coaching. The door is wide open for the Black coaches.”

Essien, a UEFA Champions League winner and one of Ghana’s most decorated players, has been steadily building his coaching profile. He has obtained his UEFA coaching licences and gained experience through roles including assistant coach at FC Nordsjælland and involvement with the Ghana national football team setup.

Kuffuor believes Essien has all the qualities required to succeed in management, pointing to his leadership, tactical awareness, and deep understanding of the game.

“Kompany has shown that Black coaches can lead the biggest clubs in the world,” Kuffuor added. “Michael Essien has the same potential. He just needs the right opportunity and belief.”

For Kuffuor, Kompany’s journey—from early challenges to elite success—serves as a blueprint, and he is confident Essien is ready to follow a similar path if given the chance.
