Michael Essien, the former Ghana and Chelsea star, has specifically identified Paul Scholes, the former Manchester United and England midfielder, as the toughest opponent he encountered throughout his illustrious career.
Having joined Chelsea from Olympique Marseille in 2005 and later representing AC Milan, Essien recognizes Scholes as the player who presented the greatest challenge on the field.
During his impressive nine-year tenure at Chelsea, Essien enjoyed remarkable success, claiming prestigious titles such as the UEFA Champions League, FA Cup, Football League Cup, Community Shield, and Premier League.
While facing numerous formidable opponents, Essien reserves special admiration for Scholes.
In an interview with Goal Africa, Essien expressed his respect, stating, “The best player I have ever faced, I mean I have faced a lot of good players in my career. I mean it’s difficult to tell.
“I faced the likes of Xavi, Iniesta and a lot of them and Steven Gerrard. But I always say Paul Scholes is one of the players that was quite tough.”
