Ghanaian defender Mohammed Salisu and his club, AS Monaco, have been eliminated from the UEFA Champions League after falling short in their playoff tie against Benfica.
The Black Stars centre-back was an unused substitute as Monaco played out a thrilling 3-3 draw at the Estádio do Dragão on Tuesday night. Unfortunately, the result was not enough to overturn their 1-0 first-leg defeat at home, leading to a 4-3 aggregate loss and their exit from the competition.
Salisu had featured in the first leg of the playoffs but was benched for the return fixture in Portugal. Despite Monaco’s spirited effort in the second leg, their hopes of reaching the Champions League group stage came to an end.
With their European journey over, the former Southampton defender and his teammates will now shift focus to their domestic campaign, aiming for success in Ligue 1.
Salisu made a notable impact in Monaco’s Champions League journey, featuring in six matches and scoring once. Across all competitions this season, the Ghanaian has made 22 appearances, finding the net three times.
