Wisdom Kobena Woyome, Chairperson of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Sports, Culture, and Tourism, has labeled Mustapha Ussif as the worst-performing Sports Minister in recent years.
Woyome’s criticism follows Ussif’s appearance before the committee on September 24, where he was questioned about the Black Stars’ poor performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast, where the team failed to progress beyond the group stage.
When asked directly if he saw himself as the worst Sports Minister, Ussif, who is also the Member of Parliament for Yagaba-Kubori, challenged the claim, stating: “I intend to disagree with your statement that I am the worst. In terms of numbers, I don’t know which numbers you are talking about, so you should be able to tell me what data you are using to determine that during my time it is the worst.”
However, Woyome, the MP for South Tongu, stood by his assessment in an interview with MAX FM, describing Ussif’s tenure as “abysmal.”
“I agree in the sense that his performance is so abysmal,” Woyome remarked. “We have not recorded such low points in our football, and our rankings have plummeted in the FIFA standings. If this isn’t bad, then what is?” he added, stressing the negative impact of Ussif’s leadership on Ghanaian sports.
