“My best Black Stars goal was against England” – Asamoah Gyan

Former Black Stars skipper Asamoah Gyan has opened up on his best goal, citing his strike against England at Wembley on March 29, 2011, as his best ever.

Gyan singled out his strike against the three lions as his best ever, after dazzling in the English box in the said game before slotting the ball past Joe Hart to draw Ghana level deep in the game (1-1).

“I used my pace to score my goal against the USA. It was a chance and I managed to score, facing the post during extra time. But my best goal for Ghana is against England. It wasn’t a chance. My back was facing the goal post and I used skills to score”. – Asamoah Gyan on Pure FM.

The remarkable goal against England was one of 50 strikes for the former Sunderland forward as the prolific marksman went on to finish his career as Ghana’s all-time top scorer with 51 goals.

Asamoah Gyan also holds the record as the African with the most goals at the FIFA World Cup, scoring in the 2006 edition, thrice in 2010, and twice in 2014.

Gyan burst onto the scene as a 17-year-wonder kid, making his debut for the Black Stars as a teenager, before going on to score in his debut in a 1-0 win for Ghana over Somalia in the 2006 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.

After initially hanging his boots from the national side in 2019 (which was reversed after a lengthy conversation with President Nana Akufo Addo), Gyan made a shocking decision to feature for the Black Stars at the 2022 World Cup but was not called to the team.

He has since gone on to be an influential figure behind the team, supporting massively – and is personally working on nurturing talents through his initiative, the all Regional Games.
